Unique Advice for Content Creators: From Starting from Scratch to Sustained Creative Breakthroughs

As a content creator, many people ask: “How do I get started? How can I create content that is uniquely mine?” Actually, the answer is simple but executing it well is not easy. Content creation is more than just writing or editing videos—it is an art that requires long-term commitment and constant evolution. Drawing from my own experience, I will share some unique and practical advice to help you find your own creative path and go further.

1. Stay True in Your Creations: Your Foundation and Strongest Competitive Edge

The first golden rule of content creation is: stay authentic.

Why is authenticity so important? Because it is the source of uniqueness and the expression of your personal value. In the vast flood of content, endless imitation and copying only make you an ordinary piece in a huge mosaic. Only by staying true to yourself, expressing your unique thoughts and feelings, can you truly build a personal brand and establish a one-of-a-kind influence.

This is not just a creative skill but a strategic mindset. Authentic content often carries the creator’s unique perspective and emotion, forging a deep connection with the audience and building loyal fans. The more authentic you are, the easier it is to be recognized and remembered, ultimately achieving personal monopoly and creating your own content kingdom.

Never imitate others!
Everyone’s experiences, ways of thinking, and styles of expression are unique. Release your true voice, and your content will naturally come alive.

2. Learn to Leverage Time’s Compound Effect and Choose Sustainable Creative Directions

Content creation is not a one-day or one-shot task; it requires long-term accumulation and continuous output.

Many new creators struggle when choosing a topic: a niche too narrow dries up quickly; a too broad focus scatters energy and blurs the brand.

I recommend the “focus first, then diversify” strategy:

  • First, concentrate deeply on one niche, master its knowledge, and build a systematic content framework.
  • As your skills and follower base grow, gradually expand into related topics to form a diversified content matrix.

This approach helps you generate time-compounded returns on your content. Every quality piece is a foundation of your future influence, attracting new users over time and producing a snowball growth effect.

For example, my first blog focused on “learning methods,” continuously producing content for four to five years and accumulating quality posts. Later, I expanded to “self-growth” and have been creating for 14 years, developing a unique original methodology. This long-term focus and accumulation is the true secret weapon in content creation.

3. Pick the Right Platform and Tailor Your Approach for a “Cold Start”

Different platforms have vastly different algorithms, user habits, and content ecosystems. Choosing the right platform can quickly get your content exposure and build your fan base.

  • WeChat Official Accounts: Best for creators who want deep, professional content in niche areas. You have high control and fans belong to you, but you need consistent updates or risk losing followers. WeChat favors high-quality original content and suits long-term brand building.
  • Douyin (TikTok), Toutiao: Algorithm-driven, ideal for creating viral short videos. Content must be catchy and entertaining to gain recommendations, but fan loyalty tends to be lower and subscription notifications less stable.
  • Zhihu, Kuaishou, Bilibili: Emphasize content diversity and support for long-tail creators. Good for deep, professional content with relatively low barriers for cold starts. Zhihu, in particular, is evolving from a Q&A community into a comprehensive content platform.
  • Weibo: Focuses on operations and social sharing, great for leveraging social networks to promote content.

Choose your platform based on your content type, creation rhythm, and target audience to find your best stage.

4. Harness the Power of “Memes” to Create Supercharged Content Virality

Memes are one of the most powerful elements of contemporary internet culture. A successful meme often acts as a catalyst for content spread, quickly resonating with fans and sparking secondary creations.

Examples:

  • Zhihu’s “Thanks for the invite, just got off the plane” as a polite, humorous reply;
  • Bilibili’s “High energy ahead” creating unique atmosphere in bullet comments;
  • PUBG’s “Winner winner, chicken dinner” becoming synonymous with victory;
  • Douyin’s “2000 YEARS LATER” adding strong humorous timing.

If you can cleverly create or use memes, your content’s viral potential skyrockets. The typical meme spread cycle is:

Content creation → Fans discover the meme → Fans remix and create derivative works → Secondary spread amplifies influence

Mastering memes is like unlocking the code to viral content.

5. Evolve Your Creative Strategy: Be a “Hero Loved by a Few,” Not an “Idol Acceptable to Many”

Many creators face the challenge of balancing uniqueness with broad appeal at some point.

There are two paths:

  • Become a “hero loved by a niche few,” building a distinctive style and attracting devoted fans;
  • Become an “idol acceptable to many,” producing generic content to please most but losing individuality.

In the long run, the first path is more valuable. Loyal fans not only support your work but often create community culture, becoming a solid base for content spread and monetization.

My own “72-hour single friend-making event” was built on this idea, precisely targeting a specific audience to create a unique content label and fan identity.

Avoid sacrificing your unique viewpoint and style just for short-term traffic by pandering to the masses. Use your content’s aesthetics and values to actively filter your audience, letting go of those who don’t fit.

Also, crafting memorable stories is key. Stories make content more attractive and your ideas easier to spread and remember. Through storytelling, connect with your audience and build unique symbols and brands, achieving ongoing content growth.

6. Subscription Model: Build Long-Term Commercial Value through Trust

Finally, for content creators, a stable, long-term monetization model is crucial. Subscription-based models have become very effective recently.

Subscriptions are built on trust — fans pay because they believe your content will continue to deliver value. Through subscriptions, you stabilize income without relying heavily on ads or one-time viral spikes.

This model protects content quality and nurtures creator-fan relationships. Paying fans affirm your content brand, creating a long-term relationship more valuable than short-term traffic.

Content creation is a long marathon. Only by staying authentic, focusing your direction, choosing platforms wisely, mastering distribution techniques, maintaining unique style, and building trust can you go further and steadier. Every creator has their own rhythm and style; the key is to find the path that suits you and keep creating sincerely. Your unique voice will eventually be heard by the world.
